Sub Palace has been a landmark in Leucadia for three decades. Established in the 70's, next door to the 7-Eleven location on Leucadia Blvd., it was originally know as Steve's Sub Palace. Reputedly, Steve was forced to move to the present spot by his financially stronger neighbor's concern over competition. Many of Steve's early customers remain loyal supporters who constantly assert that we serve the biggest and best sub in North County. In fact, a customer recently remarked how much smaller some things seem in his later years than as recalled from his childhood, except our subs - they seem even larger now than in his childhood memories. The derivation of Sub Palace's unique name has remained a puzzle to all who ponder such trivia. Well, ponder no more. The business' original sign had caricatures of dancing vegetables asserting that Sub Palace was "where you eat like a king." A good slogan superceded only by our more recent affirmation that Sub Palace is "where you are treated like royalty". Sub Palace had been through four ownerships since inception. It was started in the 70's by Steve who reportedly worked in a downtown LA deli with New York roots. Next came the McDermott family who bought the present location and operated Bob's Appliance Repair Shop side by side with Sub Palace. Irish transplants from New Jersey, they continued the "East Coast" influence. They were followed by the Macaluso family whose New Jersey Italian heritage further enhanced the "East Coast" flavor of the menu. The present owners as of April 2000, are four members of the Yargeau family - Ray, Annalee, Tim & Leeanna. Though dad, Ray, can claim an "East Coast" heritage because he moved to Leucadia from Massachusetts as a young teenager, he has managed to become a real "local" through attendance at San Dieguito High, Oceanside-Carlsbad Jr. College, and almost 40 years of Leucadia home ownership. "Momma Palace," Annalee, a So Cal native, also graduated from San Dieguito and has spent much of her lifetime guiding four children through Central (Paul Ecke) Elementary, Oak Crest, Diegueno, San Dieguito and La Costa Canyon. Tim and Leeanna are as local as you can get having lived in the same home in Leucadia since birth and attending the local schools. As partners in Sub Palace, we are all dedicated to developing its reputation as the most friendly and worthwhile dining experience in the North County. After purchasing Sub Palace, we were wary about changing anything. After all, the business already was well regarded for many years by both its local and vacationing patrons. Though decidedly adamant about retaining its menu of oversized sub sandwiches, we wanted to make the kind of changes that would mark this place as ours. Well, it wasn't too difficult to identify such changes. For over 30 years, the family vacationed in Hawaii. For close to 20 years, Annalee, Tim and Leeanna were involved with a Polynesian Dance studio in Encinitas. Shortly after assuming ownership of Sub Palace, we added a Hawaiian gift item section and we commissioned a local artist, Kevin Anderson, to create a outdoor mural depicting our favorite vacation spot at Laniakea beach on the North Shore of Oahu in the very Leucadia-like town of Haleiwa. Sadly, while Kevin completed his masterpiece on our patio in July of 2000, the family spent its last summertime vacation at its beloved beach rental. From then on, vacations have had to be slipped in during less busy times. Hopefully, all customers feel the same thing when they come ino Sub Palace - a special blend of the "Aloha sprit" assimilated by the Yargeau family during its many visits to Hawaii and the friendly, caring Leucadia attitude instilled in them by their local residency. |
